Blizzard’s in-house game fair, which was supposed to take place in February 2022, was canceled without replacement. In a blog post, the developers explain that the Blizzcon changes are also imminent in future years. Originally, like many other game events, the fair was supposed to take place online again.
Blizzcon is about to be redesigned
On the official Blizzard website the reasons are discussed in a short statement. It is not the right time to invest energy in the trade fair, instead they want to concentrate on the studio itself. You can find the Europe translation here:
At this time, we feel the energy it would take to organize a show like this should better be used to support our teams and move forward with the development of our games and experiences.
We’d also like to take the time to rethink what the future of Blizzcon might look like. The first Blizzcon was 16 years ago and a lot has changed since that time. Most noticeable are the numerous ways in which players and communities come together and feel part of something bigger.
Whatever the event will look like in the future, we also need to make sure that it feels as safe, inviting and inclusive as possible. We’re committed to communicating with our players on an ongoing basis and we see Blizzcon play a huge role in moving that forward. We look forward to what we will do with the event when we visit again in the future.
Nevertheless, as usual, there should be announcements about news and releases around February 2022.
Although it is not explicitly mentioned in the statement, the current situation, which was triggered by the scandal at Activision Blizzard, should play a major role in the decision. Recently were numerous employees fired on serious allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination
