This is definitely one of the nice surprises of the June 28th, 2022 Nintendo Direct, the gameplay trailer for Return To Monkey Island. We were also able to find out more about the temporary exclusivity.
We weren’t really expecting it like the others, but the long-awaited Return To Monkey Island revealed a first gameplay trailer during the Nintendo Direct. As a reminder, the title was developed for a number of years by the original creator of the license, Ron Gilbert himself. The man is also fully directing the artistic direction of this return to Monket Island.
Fearless hero, leather jacket salesman and mighty pirate, Guybrush Threepwood embarks on an extravagant new adventure across the Caribbean.
A clear goal for Return to Monkey Island
Ron Gilbert said earlier this year:
I don’t want to put myself under pressure to make the game you want me to do. (…) If you let me do things, you’ll love the game, I promise you that.
The man was indeed quite touched by the critics because he genuinely wants players to be able to trust him in his artistic choices. Which is understandable. As a reminder, the work belongs first and foremost to its designer.
Developed by Terrible Toybox, Return to Monkey Island is planned for 2022 with no specific release date, but will initially only appear on PC (via Steam) and the Nintendo Switch console.
