It’s been known for a while that the X-Men would appear in the MCU, but now it sounds like their own movie is finally getting started.
The MCU has slowly been sowing the seeds of the X-Men in movies like Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness, which is an alternate universe where Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier was unceremoniously killed, and in series like Ms. Marvel, which re-sets Ms. Marvel as a mutant, not an Inhuman. Now, according to Deadline, Marvel appears to be gearing up for the X-Men. According to Deadline, Michael Lesslie, the original writer of the Assassin’s Creed movies and last year’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, is currently in talks to write the screenplay for the X-Men movie.

Deadline also writes that the film is still in early development and has no cast or director yet, nor is there a release date planned. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will serve as a producer, but when is he not a producer? Both Marvel and Disney have recently found success with the nostalgic retro series X-Men ’97, which is getting a second season, though Marvel’s streaming boss wants you to remember that animation takes quite a while, so don’t expect it to be released anytime soon.
In a few months, the Marvel Universe will welcome arguably the biggest mutant movie, Deadpool vs. Wolverine, which will introduce Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to the Marvel Universe. The first trailer for the film was finally released last month, with Jackman wearing the classic yellow and blue Wolverine costume. However, I personally don’t expect Jackman to stay in the movie for too long, because the film is another multiverse story, and both he and Reynolds promised that it would not affect the beloved Logan. In addition, Marvel obviously hopes to introduce its own Wolverine at the right time to attract some new audiences.
