The Epic library should grow tremendously in the near future. From now on everyone can (at least theoretically) publish their own games there. To self-publish, all you have to do is sign up, drop $100 on the virtual table, and follow the guidelines. And some of them are much stricter than on Steam.
What games are banned on the platform and what are Epic’s guidelines for new titles?
The rules for Epic’s new self-publishing
Quality must be right: Each game is reviewed before release. If it doesn’t run well enough or causes problems during installation, Epic can cancel the release.
Crossplay with other PC stores: All multiplayer games must be able to play together with PC players who own the title on another platform such as Steam or GOG. Steam doesn’t have such a rule for its Steamworks API program, which Epic CEO Tim Sweeny recently criticized. You can read more about this on my MMO.
No porn: Epic still doesn’t allow pornographic games. This means pure sex games, a Cyberpunk 2077 will be despite a lot, much
Pornographic games are generally allowed on Steam, but only to a limited extent in Europey:
Blockchain titles are allowed: Blockchain games are strictly forbidden on Steam, but Epic has no objection in principle to such titles. However, according to the rules, there must be a real game behind it, if there is a suspicion of a scam, it will be removed. Hopefully there will not be pure NFT farms.
All in English: All content must be available exclusively or also in English. Additional languages are of course allowed, but English is the official language at Epic, so to speak.
Epic says it will continue to offer one or more free games every week through 2023. Will self-publishing titles make it into the selection in the future? Are you hoping for exciting niche games that will soon end up in the Epic library or are you even planning to publish something there yourself?
