Sephiroth’s boss fight in the first Kingdom Hearts game remains one of the toughest in the series, and his voice actor doesn’t seem to be able to beat him.
We’ve all been there: You’re working your way up the ranks in the Olympus Coliseum, worry-free. You’re knocking down giants, duking it out with your Final Fantasy buddies, you’ve done it! Then, those damn strings start to ring, and the one and only Sephiroth appears. Of course, you’re thoroughly beaten, because he’s tough as nails. To this day, he’s still tough, and arguably even harder to fight than Sephiroth in the second game, given the wider range of tools you have at your disposal in the sequel. So I can’t entirely blame Lance Bass, the voice actor for the character in the first Kingdom Hearts game (and also a member of some boy band called NSYNC or something like that), for not being able to beat him.

As spotted by GamesRadar, Bass recently hosted an Ask Me Anything event on Reddit to promote his upcoming TV special. One fan asked him what it took to become the voice actor for Sephiroth, and if he’s ever played Sephiroth and defeated the villain in Final Fantasy 7. Bass responded, “Yeah, I’m kind of good at playing Sephiroth. No, I’ve never been able to kill my own character. He’s just too hard! But when I tell people I voice Sephiroth, they’re definitely really surprised. In fact, I think a lot of people are upset and they’re surprised that I voiced Sephiroth. But God gave you a loud bass, you have to make good use of it!”
He’s definitely a surprising casting choice, but the first Kingdom Hearts game is full of actors like him. They’re all very true to their era, too – David Boreanaz, star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and his own spinoff Angel, voices Leon, Ewen Stevens’ Christy Carlson Romano voices Yuffie, singer and Tangled star Mandy Moore voices Alice, and everyone’s favorite Titanic villain Billy Zane voices Kingdom Hearts’ big bad, Ansem. And who could forget Haley Joel Osment, who played Sora from The Sixth Sense and is the only one of the many aforementioned actors still voicing his character.
The point is, Bass, you’re not the only one fighting Sephiroth. With a little training, and lots of level grinding, I’m sure you can do it!
