Since “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” fell short of expectations in its first weekend, an early stream release is to be expected. Will the Fury Road be leading through your living room in June 2024?
That patience can pay off is a lesson that Hollywood has forgotten in recent years. Even though Pixar’s “Elemental” in 2023 proved that an initial flop can still become a hit with staying power, many film studios decide on the future of a new film after just one weekend.
After “The Fall Guy” fell short of Universal’s expectations and was released on stream just three weeks after its theatrical release, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is likely to suffer a similar fate. When and where will the film starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth be available to stream?
Things are going mediocre!
Even Warner Bros. isn’t that crazy and would reveal when “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” will be available to stream less than a week after its theatrical release. However, unless the film does significantly better in the next few days, the streaming launch of “Furiosa” is expected to begin at the end of June 2024, just under 4 weeks after its initial release.
“Challengers,” another Warner reboot, recently landed on stream in the U.S. after just three weeks, but posed a much lower financial risk due to a lower budget. Warner Bros. could make the most money from “Furiosa” if it hits the big screen, but weak forecasts are likely to lead to Warner soon pursuing a two-pronged approach to secure revenue from all possible directions.
In other words: “Furiosa” will be available in cinemas and on stream from the end of June. Such early stream releases are usually quite expensive, so “Furiosa” can be rented for $19.99 and bought for $24.99. It will only be cheaper when “Furiosa” is also released on Blu-Ray and DVD, so around the end of August 2024.
A stream release in Germany usually follows later, but not always. “Dune 2,” for example, landed on the stream internationally quite early – despite good viewing figures. Hollywood doesn’t seem to understand that the early stream releases are partly responsible for the low number of cinemagoers…
