The Game Developers Conference this year will probably not be as important as usual. With Electronic Arts, another heavyweight in the industry has now said goodbye to the event.
After Sony, Oculus and Kojima Productions had previously announced that they would stay away from the Game Developers Conference 2020 contrary to previous plans, Electronic Arts has now also communicated a change in its own plans. With the publisher, another heavyweight says goodbye to the actually quite well-known game event in March, which was always good for one or the other new presentation.
In this case, too, this has less to do with the fact that the GDC taking place in San Francisco would become less important. EA, however, said goodbye to the March event – just like the competition – due to the currently rampant corona virus. Accordingly, EA has now advised its employees not to attend the event in mid-March and has canceled official appearances.
The news was initially confirmed by Alex Sherer and Battlefield's Erik Ortman; both apologized for the short-term absence from the event. EA later added an official statement: "We have followed the global Corona virus situation and given the recent outbreaks in new regions, we have decided to take additional steps to protect the wellbeing of our employees, including that Limitation of trips that are not absolutely necessary. "
And further: "As a result, we also cancel our official participation in the GDC and limit the participation to other events. We will continue to monitor the situation and further adjust the guidelines for our employees if we feel that this is necessary."
GDC 2020 is scheduled for March 16-20, 2020 in San Francisco and might have been particularly interesting considering the new generation of PS5 and Xbox Series X planned for later this year.
