Beowulf becomes part of Assassin's Creed Valhalla. And no, we don't mean the CGI film from 2007, but the saga on which it is based. The shop page of the Valhalla Season Pass reveals this fact – however exclusively in Germany.
Because the international colleagues lack a detailed description of what exactly the Season Pass of the game contains. The German shop says:
"Contains the story mission: The Legend of Beowulf. Discover the cruel truth behind the legend."
This short snippet doesn't look like much, but it confirms (similar to the gameplay teaser for Valhalla) some exciting points that have only been hinted at so far.
Why is Beowulf exciting in AC Valhalla?
The early medieval hero epic Beowulf tells of the warrior of the same name, who went to war against the monster Grendel in Scandinavia and later rose to the rank of king. The plot (fictional from today's perspective) takes place roughly in the 5th and 6th centuries, two to three centuries before the events of Assassin's Creed Valhalla.
- With the Season Pass mission, Ubisoft confirms the (temporary) return to the old financing model: Anyone who invests in the Season Pass not only receives the large DLCs, but already at the launch exclusive smaller content
- It is now very certain that supernatural beings like those in Odyssey will be an important part of Valhalla. And not just because of Odin's appearance in the Valhalla Cinematic Trailer. A Beowulf mission also indicates mythological encounters there. More on this in our article on the topic: "Supernatural in AC Valhalla: What role gods will play."
- Conversely, uncovering the "cruel truth" behind Beowulf could also allude to a very secular interpretation of the saga.
- And last but not least: The outsourcing to an optional Season Pass DLC also makes it clear that the legend of Beowulf has little relevance to the actual main story. This was more common in the past, for example with Benedict Arnold in Assassin's Creed 3 or Copernicus in Brotherhood.
Already in Assassin's Creed: Odyssey the myths of the Greeks, such as the Medusa or the Minotaur, were linked in a very own way to the Assassin's Creed cosmos. Assassin's Creed Valhalla looks very similar.
