Matthew Gallant, the mastermind behind the remaster of The Last of Us 2, doesn’t understand the criticism of the game. There is a risk of upsetting more than one person.
The Last of Us 2 remaster is finally available and we gave it the highest score in our columns. For those who have never played the game, now is the perfect time to start. However, even before its introduction, it wasn’t for everyone. This in itself is not surprising, but the director does not understand certain criticisms of his game and therefore does not hesitate to defend it. It remains to be seen whether this will be well received by players.
The director of the remaster of The Last of Us 2 is incomprehensible
During an interview for media outlet VGC, Matthew Gallant addressed the negative feedback surrounding The Last of Us 2 remaster, especially after its announcement. In fact, he can “ Dismay at what is on offer in the game “. For him there is no doubt that it is the best way to enjoy what comes next. “If you have just purchased a PlayStation and are new to the franchise, we want to give you the best experience with all the features of a native PS5 version of the game.”
The criticism we’ve probably heard most often concerns interest in a remaster on the PS5. On paper, this is not uncommon in our time. We end up seeing complete or minor redesigns quite often. However, The Last of Us 2 was released on PS4 in June 2020. Then, in 2021, we welcomed the PlayStation 5 patch. For some people, it’s a little too early to offer a remaster, despite the additions included. On the contrary, this is one of the arguments that Gallant makes. Adding new content would justify the existence of this new version.
I feel like there is an audience for whom the idea of a PS5 version is exciting. Speaking for myself too, I’m glad we can make this available to fans, and if it’s not for everyone, that’s okay.

Pretty substantial additions
As for these famous new features for The Last of Us 2 remaster, there are mainly two of them (if we leave aside the graphical improvements). First we have the big piece, which is the roguelite word called “No Return”. The latter allows you to unlock a good package of cosmetics for the base game. There is no multiplayer mode here, just a single player mode in which you have to survive as long as possible in each game. In reality, it’s more complex, with a multi-branch campaign that itself consists of random missions and a boss to defeat. Exciting, right?
The other element of this The Last of Us 2 Remastered that has piqued the curiosity of players is the Lost Levels. A total of three passages of the game were “cancelled” by the studio. This allows you to play back these unfinished sequences while benefiting from audio notes that allow you to learn more about the development. For our part, we felt that it was a bit too short and that it wouldn’t have been taboo to find it in the final version in a director’s cut. It’s up to you to form an opinion on this topic.
