Bruce Wayne is dead. The vicious criminals of Gotham City are keen to take advantage of the violence-free city and a masked antisocial billionaire. But they didn’t count on one thing – various offspring of Batman.Nightwing, Batgirl, Robin and Red Hood are namesake Gotham Knightsand it’s up to them to take on Batman’s mission to protect Gotham, who always seems to be in danger, from criminal lunatics.
The game begins with Batman’s bat signal bat giving a bat call to his four underlings, warning them that all hell in Gotham City could now erupt as he (apparently) kicks the bat barrel.
The title was developed by WB Montréal’s in-house Warner Bros. team – the studio responsible for Batman: Arkham Origins. This game isn’t a direct continuation of the Arkam series, but a side story in that regard – it will be Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, continuing the story from the original trilogy.
If you’re eager to learn more about the characters in this title, you can play the following roles:
- Dick Grayson / nightwing: OG Robin wants something darker and more brooding for his superhero moniker.
- Jason Todd / red hood: Robin No. 2 had a nervous breakdown when the Joker nearly mashed him up.
- Barbara Gordon / batgirl: A very grieving woman; her father Jim Gordon died before Batman. But just because she’s alone, that doesn’t mean she can’t kick ass.
- Tim Drake / Rob in
As for the gameplay, we can not only travel with vehicles in the open world part of the game, but also traverse smaller environments, engage in closer CQC, hand-to-hand combat, and use stealth to take down enemies. See how this will also work according to the game It will be interesting to see how you play in the different parts of the game, who you play, and how co-op works in the usual single-player setting.
It’s a brave move to make a Batman game without Batman, but using Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League operates on the other side of the DC Universe, a title that seems to have given Dark Knight fans something to offer The kind of action-playful thirst they want.
But is it worth the excitement? That remains to be seen – I personally don’t rate Arkham Origins at all, so the jury is still out on whether WB Games can offer something of real value to the game. Times (and developers) have changed, so maybe WB has managed to integrate its bat poop enough to actually deliver the goods. I’m also uneasy about the multiplayer protagonist thing, and I’m curious if the game can stand up to the tried and true all-rounder Rocksteady and their own with the wider DC events that killed the Justice League.
I’m still not convinced, but maybe a really good gameplay trailer sometime this year will convince me that, in fact, the game is worth it after all.
Gotham Knights is currently expected to release on Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC on October 25, 2022, following a deal with 2021.
