HBO’s adaptation last survivor has received its first official trailer, giving us a good, long look at the show, as well as a sneaky cameo.
So far, we’ve only had a few things we can expect from the reality show naughty dog The Last of Us, like these posters from earlier this week, and the trailer in August. But HBO has released a full trailer for all of us to watch, which, inexplicably, is set to be the theatrical version of the movie trailer for a-ha’s Take On Me.
If you’re new to the series, the trailer helps establish the main concept: Joel takes Ellie, a teenage girl who’s been bitten by an infected man but doesn’t turn herself in, across the West—one side of the country to learn why she’s still Alive, and possibly find a cure.
After some setup, for some reason, we get a montage of Take On Me and briefly introduce some familiar faces like Marlene, played by Merle Dandridge, who also plays her in the game, from the Left Alive DLC. Riley (Storm Reed), Bill (Nick Offerman) and Sam and Henry (Kevon Woodard and Lamar Johnson). The trailer ends with an ominous shot of a bloated infected, an obvious menace to anyone who’s played the game.
One of the funniest moments in the trailer is a special shot showing a character holding a baby, played by Ellie’s original voice actor, Ashley Johnson. Fans have been speculating about what role Johansson will play in the series, as both she and Joel Virginia Troy Baker have been confirmed to appear on the show. Through this brief shot, some wonder if she’ll be playing Allie’s mother, Ana, whom we never actually see in the game.
We’ll know soon, though, as The Last of Us hits HBO Max next month, January 15.
