At this point, Helldivers 2 actually welcomes the long-rumored third faction – the first game's “Illuminate” – which feels like something we've been talking about on and off for years. However, there is now new hope in the form of a Steam repository update for the game, literally titled “gameplay_Illuminates.”
No, I'm not trying to make you angry. It seems that Arrowhead, for whatever reason, took on potential literal meanings like “Democratic Space Station” in what it did to the game earlier today, which naturally raises questions about what we all thought might be Speculations about the young man who rose up in the galactic war. Around the time Meridia became spaghetti-ified and some time after that.

As eagle-eyed Hellraiser 2 subreddit user Dangerous-Return5937 discovered, Hellraiser 2 received a repository update earlier today that literally reads “gameplay_illustrates,” according to SteamDB. No more information can be gleaned about what this update actually means – whether it heralds the arrival of the “illuminations” suggested by the title, or when they might actually be deployed in the game.
Just the name, where anyone with an internet connection can find it, means it's technically not even a leak, depending on how you classify these things. Of course, players are divided on how to take advantage of it. Those who wanted to believe became excited, while others took a wait-and-see approach, and still others were simply confused.
As some in the latter camp have pointed out, it seems odd that Arrow would decide to give it such an obvious name if it were the Illuminator. While it appends other recent updates with titles like “studio_playtest” and “gameplay_worlds”, it also has some updates with names like “mimosa”, “orion”, and “wushu” that are less likely to trigger potential inappropriate players guess.
As one HD2 subreddit moderator put it: “If anything, Arrowhead is asking the depot to update the title.” Regardless, some still believe this will be the studio pranking them, rather than committing some crime. mistake. “Can't wait to update the lighting in the game, everyone is confused,” one person wrote.
For now, don’t over-hype it, because even though this is about those illuminators, there’s no guarantee that means they’ll arrive properly in the near future, but be sure to let us know what you think of this strange phenomenon below!
