The FTC’s ongoing trial against Microsoft to prevent the company from moving ahead with its planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard has yielded more behind-the-scenes information about the corporate and business deals of Xbox and rival PlayStation.
As part of the courtroom evidence-gathering process, anyone interested – such as PlayStation boss Jim Ryan – can provide statements/evidence to argue whether an acquisition should take place. Ryan previously attacked Xbox in a number of ways during the trial, including claiming that the publisher didn’t like Xbox Game Pass.
In another showcase for the trial, Ryan told investors in early 2022 that Sony was tired of offering Roblox on PlayStation because the platform was popular with children. The vast majority of Roblox’s audience (about 50%) is under the age of 13, which is why Sony is careful not to create content on its platform that could exploit children.
Roblox is available on PC, mobile, and Xbox, but is conspicuously absent on PlayStation.
When asked about Roblox’s absence, Ryan (spotted by Axios) said: “Historically, with the large number of children playing on PlayStation, we’ve been very careful about exposing them to anything that could be exploited. “
Despite this, Sony has softened its stance on the matter, but the game has yet to release on PlayStation.
“We’ve been conservative for too long, and now we’re engaging with Roblox folks. We hope that changes,” Ryan added.
Roblox has sparked controversy in the past with poor moderation, resulting in an unsafe environment for children, such as modes with harmful content. The company behind it has also been criticized for taking more than 75% of its profits from user-generated content.
