Just recently, a skin for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 caused some excitement: The costume in the colors of the LA Thieves, a team in the CoD league, sold extremely well and was even among the top sellers for a while Steam. We reported on the background to its popularity and the reactions in the community:
CoD Warzone 2
Skin is selling incredibly well, players fear a problem
Now the skin is to be changed to bury the controversy with it. But instead, many players are apparently trying to get their money back, while others react with gloating or just shaking their heads.
Why is the skin changing?
There is no official statement about the change. Instead, just an image of the new version of the skin appears in Call of Duty’s latest blog post covering the December 14 Midseason Update.
The reason for the clear criticism of the skin as well as for its success was that many players expected competitive advantages from it. So there was already a particularly dark skin in the first Warzone, which was hardly visible in certain lighting conditions. This was repeatedly used to surprise opponents by remaining unseen in particularly dark corners.
While it’s still unclear whether the LA Thieves skin will also offer an advantage, it is now likely to be changed for this reason, or because of criticism from the community.
After it became known that the skin would be changed, some buyers apparently tried to get their money back. According to the CoD experts at CharlieIntel, this has probably succeeded in some cases, as confirmed by comments under their tweet:

Among the players who did not purchase the skin, on the other hand, gloating spreads. Many assume that the skin was only bought so often because it was hoped for a playful advantage. On Reddit the forthcoming change is discussed in detail. For example E-rye pointed out that exactly this situation would have been predicted:
I distinctly remember someone on this sub-reddit predicting the exact same situation. There’s a skin that seems to offer a perk, the sweats are crazy about it, Activision makes a buck and then fixes the skin to remove the perk.
Often there is also the accusation that the developers or publishers would have released such a skin on purpose in order to rake in a lot of money and planned from the outset to change it a short time later. Commented like this jibberDAjabber:
All part of the money making master plan.
That’s how it will be in part perceived as dishonestthat the previously purchased item will be modified afterwards, regardless of whether it offers an advantage or not. Finally, there are also players who want the new version of the skin like it even betterand who only want to buy it now.
There was a lot of criticism not only about the sale of the skin, but also after the problematic release of Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2. But Activision probably doesn’t care that much, as Dimi writes in his column:
CoD Modern Warfare 2
Putting it on the market unfinished was unfortunately the right decision
