Naughty Dog caused a surprise at the Game Awards by unveiling its new game, but controversy exploded right after…
The Game Awards 2024 night was one of the best years in a long time, and yet controversy still arose. In addition to the usual stories of political-economic conspiracies aimed at the ceremony, the jury or even the votes, the results (etc.), it is the games that take their place. Contrary to all expectations, these are the biggest announcements from Naughty Dog and even CD Projekt that are not unanimously approved, and guess why?
Naughty Dog and CD Projekt are too “woke”
If CD Projekt hasn't really had a problem until now, apart from releasing Cyberpunk 2077 in a disastrous state, Naughty Dog is not the first to be controversial, and the same subject: its characters and writing are considered woke. Some will even call it propaganda, let's go there. And the trailer didn't failIntergalactic The heretical prophettheir next big game, was enough to ignite the powder, and some “fans” once again viewed the game as mere “propaganda” for an “ideology” espoused by a minority they considered “too loud.” .
As proof, they point the finger at the heroine Jordan A. Mun, an extremely tough mercenary, shaved hair, visible tattoos… and that's it. The character takes on the traits of her interpreter Tati Gabrielle, a young actress who we have already seen in several films and series (The New Adventures of Sabrina, You, Uncharted, etc.). According to this group of players, there is also a problem here that the actress feels that she is too bright because of her physique, but also because she has always been committed to the cause. Naughty Dog finds itself in a similar situation to Sucker Punch and the artist of Ghost of Yotei recently. A trip to social networks is enough to see the “argument” used.
Note that CD Projekt is also in trouble because of The Witcher 4. Ciri would obviously be too old for some (it's almost the same people burning down the two games). She was obviously too “daronne”, she was no longer “beautiful”. The fact that there are several years between The Witcher 3 and 4 (we don't even know how many) apparently shouldn't matter.
Some fans just aren't convinced, but remain curious
Other players, on the other hand, are more moderate Intergalactic The Heretical Prophetand simply claims that she isn't thrilled with what they saw or that the heroine just isn't talking to them. Many are still curious about what it can bring. Naughty Dog accommodates this, we know the studio's writing know-how and its attention to detail. Seeing the studio change course may be unsettling, but it should pique the curiosity of early fans.
Rude product placements that don't work
But Naughty Dog is also caught with another theme, this time having nothing to do with its characters but with what surrounds it. The trailer shows us several somewhat rough product placements that we weren't expecting at all. Jordan steers a great Porsche ship, wears Adidas sneakers and enjoys retro gear from Sony, for example. Although in itself it is not very serious to see the logo of the company that owns the studio, the placement of advertising in video games remains very delicate, especially when the brands are in the foreground. Here too, this decision causes a lot of stir and is not at all popular.
Well, we always have some who talk to us about conspiracies, but the most measured have called on Naughty Dog for transparency and restraint. We can't really blame the latter. It now remains to be seen whether this is just a placement for a trailer, or a partnership that we will find in the full game. We'll have to wait a while for this because even though the game has been announced, we don't yet know when it will be released.
