The sixth episode of “House of the Dragon” introduces a new character who will have a major impact on the rest of the series. Qarl Gorge, the lover of Laenor Velaryon.
Qarl is a knight of Driftmark who fought alongside Laenor in the Battle of the Stepping Stones. After Gottfrid Lonmund’s death, Laenor found security with the soldier.

In episode 7 of “House of the Dragon,” the entire family gathers on Driftmark to mourn the loss of Laena Velaryon (Nanna Blondell). An argument breaks out between Alicent and Rhaenyra, which hardens the divisions between the two families even further. Rhaenyra re alizes that she can only consolidate her claim to the throne with a strong husband at her side. She decides to marry Daemon.
In order for Rhaenyra to marry her uncle, Laenor must disappear from the scene. For fans of the book “Fire & Blood” by George RR Martin, Laenor’s death has long been known.
In episode 7 there is a duel on Driftmark between the lovers Qarl and Laenor. Out of jealousy, Qarl kills Laenor in his parents’ hall and pushes his body into the large fireplace.
Was Laenor killed? Daemon Targaryen’s grand plan
In reality, Laenor Velaryon was not killed at all. Daemon Targaryen offered gold to Qarl Gorge to make it appear that he had killed Laenor. Rhaenyra finally wants a husband at her side who can really fulfill all marital duties and with whom she can have legitimate children. That’s why Laenor has to disappear.
It will also be a blessing for Laenor to finally be able to be his true self far away from Westeros and to be able to live openly with Qarl Gorge. Qarl kills a guard and stages a fight with the Velaryon heir in the chambers of Laenor, which a servant witnesses. When he goes to get help, Laenor swaps clothes with the dead guard and the body is put in the fire so that it can no longer be identified.
When Corlys and Rhaenys Velaryon come into the room, all they see is the charred corpse of their supposed son; Laenor and Qarl have already fled in a boat. Laenor shaved his hair so that he would not be recognized while escaping.
Now Rhaenyra is free to finally marry Daemon, whom she wanted to have by her side from the start. A bonus, at least in Daemon’s eyes, is that from now on everyone thinks they killed Laenor. This incites fear among her enemies and the people, and the legitimacy of Rhaenyra’s legacy is no longer publicly challenged.
