The announcement that the fan-favorite was coming to Steam with a graphical makeover came in 2019, thirteen years after the original 2006 release.

In the main mode, Fortress, you build the eponymous dwarf castle in a world that is generated along with a thousand-year history. Races, landscapes, stories, everything exists and evolves persistently.
You start as a small group of dwarves with a few resources, dig into a mountain, build your first rooms and workshops. The little beard bearers have always hungry and thirstyproduce garbage, multiply, have their own life stories and desires (especially beer), and so on.
The great attraction of Dwarf Fortress lies in the complex interplay of countless game mechanics. They master and juggle, constantly learning new things and reacting appropriately to a multitude of everyday challenges … all this is what makes the construction game so appealing for many players. And such a game can fail in countless ways.
For example, you stored the trash indoors, creating toxic miasma that makes your dwarves sick. That’s why they fail in the fight against attacking robbers: Zack, all dead, game over! In keeping with the numerous variants of failure, the motto of the tough game is: Losing is fun.
