The movie version of Shadow the Hedgehog is coming to theaters in Sonic X: Shadow Generations, but most people at Sega didn’t even know Keanu Reeves would be returning to the game.
Yesterday, at Sony’s latest PlayStation State of Play, Sega showed off the Sonic X Shadow Generations DLC add-on, and unsurprisingly, Shadow is among them, but surprisingly, it’s based on the events of the upcoming third movie – and even features Keanu Reeves voicing the character. Although it’s only a brief DLC, it looks very interesting, Shadow’s model is very similar to the character in the movie, and Reeves voicing this version is unexpected, as movie stars rarely voice video games. But interestingly, in a post on the official PlayStation blog, series producer Shun Nakamura shared that most developers didn’t even know Reeves would be voicing Shadow in the DLC.

When asked if there were any fun stories about working with the Sonic the Movie team, Nakamura explained, “Even within SEGA, information about the movie was only revealed to very few members, so when we were developing this content, we were working with very limited materials provided by Paramount. We mainly discussed and collaborated with Iizuka-san, who obviously also knew about the movie. We haven’t actually seen the final scene from the movie yet, so we’re looking forward to seeing how close our game will end up being to the movie!”
Speaking of working with Reeves, Nakamura went on to explain: “It was a very secret process, so when we started adding voices to the game, we didn’t actually know who the voice was. The dubbing was done by Mr. Iizuka in the United States, so when we received the recorded sound file, we listened to it and thought, is this that actor…? So we were also surprised after Paramount officially announced it!”
The DLC movie pack will be released on December 12, a little over a week ahead of the film’s December 20 release, and is included with the Digital Deluxe Edition of Sonic X Shadow Generations.
