It’s typically a tough year for big franchises on the big screen, but The Flash may still be the biggest flop of them all.
For some strange reason, Warner Bros. Pictures and the former DCEU regime thought all they needed to sell the troubled project was a past incarnation of Batman that the zoomers didn’t even know about and revisit a highly divisive franchise. A Superman movie, instead of, you know, focusing on the title character. Well, now DC Studios head James Gunn is trying to rewrite history that still feels too new.

Gunn has been putting out some hilarious work at a consistent rate so far on both Marvel and DC, and he’s very good at delivering surprising cameos without losing sight of the larger story he’s telling. So it would be foolish to worry about the increasingly crowded Superman: Legacy cast right now, as they’re tasked with kicking off a new on-screen continuity. He has earned our trust.
But that doesn’t mean everything he says as head of DC Studios should be praised. His latest tepid take comes from a comment on Threads, where he briefly discussed with fans how he handles his busy roster of characters and his interest in guest appearances that have comic book readers pointing to the screen without adding any value the opinion of. Not surprisingly, he was critical of them. But wait, didn’t he say earlier this year that The Flash was one of the best superhero movies ever made?
We understand that you have to do what you have to do, especially when you’re in trouble and trying to regain the trust of the fans. Gassing The Flash was part of the deal. He wasn’t responsible for how that movie (or many other recently released DC movies) ended up, and no one should blame him for that, but it’s almost 2024, so we’re sure he could cut that crap out, or at least Find a better movie he “loved” from six months ago that didn’t have friendly fire but instead criticized a very real issue. That doesn’t look good, especially when he’s been so conscientious and transparent online.
Gunn being so opinionated is (and will be) a double-edged sword, as he’s clearly gotten many of his longtime partners at Marvel Studios into trouble. We wish we could get more of this kind of sincerity from Hollywood’s studio head and creative mastermind, but in the meantime, he’s gotten himself into trouble in the past for talking too much. Now we just hope history doesn’t repeat itself as he has become more important.
