John Carpenter’s interviews are never boring, and his recent interview at AV Club was no exception. As a respected horror film producer and composer, as well as an avid gamer, he also has a lot to say about video games.
AV Club’s William Hughes asked Carpenter about the games he’s played, what he likes about them, and even his gaming habits. What came quickly was Carpenter’s obsession with Fallout 76, “I’m hooked on this Fallout 76 game. Obsessed with it for a long time. You know, I know it’s bugged and a lot has been Deleted, but I think it’s great. It’s really fun to play.” He also mentioned that he’s been following Borderlands and Horizon Forbidden City.
Notably, Carpenter seems to prefer exploring more open-world games, saying, “It’s a lot of fun. You can roam freely and do what you want. That’s why I love Fallout.” There’s a template To follow, there are tasks, but you can do things differently. Every once in a while, they come up with new missions and new ideas,” Carpenter said.

After recommending Carpenter to play Elden Ring, who has yet to try FromSoftware RPG, he was asked if he would consider writing the soundtrack for the game. Carpenter has scored many notable films, including “Halloween,” “The Mist,” “They’re Alive,” and more. So, given his love of the game, you might think he might try to score, but when asked about it, Carpenter replied: “If someone asked me, I would. But no one asked! “
Currently, the only game to feature Carpenter’s licensed work is The Thing, a video game based on Carpenter’s 1982 film of the same name.
Finally, Hughes asked Carpenter if he’d considered turning the game into a movie, saying, “The only thing I can think of, and I’ve mentioned before, is Dead Space. That would be a really great movie. I could Do that.” Now, that doesn’t confirm Carpenter is working on a Dead Space movie, but it’s certainly an interesting idea. I knew I would definitely pay to see it.

Carpenter also shared that gaming is a big part of his life, an activity he definitely finds more fun than directing a movie. For him, gaming is a form of relaxation. I wish I could say the same. When finally asked about the modern game if Carpenter would like to see any change, he said, “Oh, heck, no. Go on. Go on being great. That’s what I’m saying because they’re all good. I’m right. They don’t have any criticism. I don’t want them to do what they don’t. What they do is very good. I started in 1992, Sonic the Hedgehog. Trying to figure out how to fuck that game. Omg. This pair It’s hard for me. I mean, no one else, I’m sure.”
Last but not least, does Carpenter feel a sense of accomplishment when he completes a daunting task in the game? Yes. “I’m so proud of myself. Celebrate, I don’t know, smoking a marijuana cigarette.”
