Prime Video has released the first trailer for the live-action Yakuza series, but don’t expect too much from it.
We’re currently in the age of gaming adaptations, with TV shows like The Last of Us and Fallout, and movies like The Super Mario Bros. Movie all finding success. So it was no surprise last month when Sega and Amazon announced the latest live-action adaptation of the beloved gaming series, Yakuza: Yakuza. Now, at San Diego Comic-Con, Amazon has released the first trailer for the series, but… it doesn’t show us a whole lot. There’s plenty of footage of main character Kazuma Kiryu (played this time by Ryu Takeuchi), getting a tattoo, and shots of some men looking very serious – one even sheds a tear – but it’s hard to know what the show will actually be like.
The Yakuza series certainly has its serious moments, but it’s also filled with plenty of silliness, which is severely lacking in this trailer. Hopefully the full trailer will make the plot a little clearer than this one did, but it still looks promising. The official synopsis for Yakuza: Yakuza explains: “Spanning 1995 to 2005, the series follows the lives of childhood friends and the impact of the decisions made by Kazuma Kiryu, a fearsome and unrivaled yakuza fighter with a str ong sense of justice, duty, and humanity.” Kiryu’s main companion, Akira Nishikiyama (aka Nishiki), will reportedly be played by Kento Kaku.

Takeuchi recently spoke about what it was like to play such an iconic character as Ichiro Kiryu, and how he tried to put his own spin on the Ryu Dojima. Yakuza: Yakuza will be available on Prime Video on October 24, and you’ll be able to watch the first three episodes then.
