For a few years we have been able to observe how the video game industry begins to worry more about gameplay that by pure visual artifice, creating games with a esthetic low poly or what is the same, "low in polygons", like those old bestsellers of the 90s that we played non-stop on our SNES or consoles of the time.
To this day, there are games like Celeste that has sold 500,000 copies in a year, quite an achievement for a little-known independent studio game and with a really small team of people involved in its development.
Something similar happened with the already classic RPG Undertale who went from being a complete stranger to being a resounding success worldwide, partly due to its retro aesthetics and simple but impressive graphics, and partly thanks to h is original game mechanics
What is a game low poly?
This is one of those questions that yes it has an easy answer, because it is considered a video game low poly to the one whose Graphics emulate retro or 90s aesthetics and that they do not need too many graphic resources to run on a console, PC or mobile device. However, despite these factors, they are usually titles that they have a very well defined and striking aestheticGreat examples of this are Lara Croft: Go, Gray or the already billionaires Monument Valley I / II and Alto’s Adventure / Odyssey.
The vast majority of these games, in addition, are included in the indie games category, that is, those titles that are not distributed or created under the protection of a large studio or large distributor, but they are marketed in a freer way and without intermediaries. This has a great positive point, the game has creative freedom to offer what you want and the way you want, but you also have a great counter, Reaching the general public is more difficult and does not always guarantee that small studies recover the great investment made.
The big ones, too low poly
Although this aesthetic and way of understanding games was recovered by indie studios, large companies in the video game industry have also wanted to take advantage of the pull of retro
And it would be crazy not to try to put out games with this aesthetic that sells so well, saving costs on large technical invoices and allowing exploration new ways of play or new ways to add news. What is curious, in my opinion, is that the best games low poly and the most original are in the hands of fairly small indie studios, which shows that sometimes it is better for a team to have greater imaginative potential that you have too many resources and do not know what to focus on to create a superb game.
A high resolution future
IMHO I think that the games low poly and the indies in general
With this I don't mean that no AAA breed titles and that they are really good, but you will be with me that the majority could take good note of the innovation and originality with which many indies who seek not only a flashy graphic aspeco, but also offer a great gaming experience that remember forever. At the end of the day that's what it's all about, that a game is really memorable.
