Indiana Jones and the Grand Circle may be a first-person perspective game, but that doesn’t mean MachineGames has made it a pure shooter.

MachineGames is known for its first-person shooters – in fact, it’s even been praised for them, especially for its fondness for games that let you literally destroy Nazis (like Wolfenstein), which Indiana Jones also does frequently. But Indiana Jones rarely uses guns (save for that famous scene). He’s more of a whip-and-fist kind of guy, and recently the game’s creative director Axel Torvenius spoke to Edge magazine (via GamesRadar) about not relying too much on gunplay, which the team sees as more of a “fallback solution.”

“We don’t encourage gunplay. We don’t use it as the primary way to advance,” Tovenis explains. “The primary way to advance is always to try to use your wits and your whip.” Those who know the movies also know that Indiana Jones is the kind of character who uses his wits to defeat people rather than just outright killing them with a gun, because he’s mostly just a regular archaeologist (if you ignore the adventures he keeps having).

“Indiana doesn’t have super powers,” Tovenis continued. “A lot of times, you can tell he’s having a hard time dealing with combat. He’s a teacher at the end of the day and a slightly clumsy archaeologist. He just happens to have this passion, and it often gets him into weird situations with enemies and traps.”

“It wouldn’t be true to the character if he was constantly shooting at all the enemy camps, and the MachineGames team wanted to emphasize the level of danger. We were trying to capture that feeling, and if you need to get involved in a fight, being shot at is very dangerous. It’s also dangerous to shoot at the enemy because they have alarm systems and reinforcements.”

That sounds pretty reassuring, to be honest, since most of the memorable scenes from the original film weren’t about big shootouts or anything like that.

Indiana Jones and the Grand Circle finally got a release date at Gamescom, which is obviously great news for Xbox and PC fans – but PlayStation fans will be happy to see that they’ll be able to play the game, too (even if it comes a little later).
