The Midnight Suns, a childhood dream for the Firaxis teams
Marvel’s Midnight Suns is the new project from Firaxis, fathers of the XCOM saga, known as one of the greatest franchises in the tactical games genre. With this title The developers are working for the first time on an IP that is not theirs and not any, as it is about the superheroes of the Marvel Universe. With such a license being over eighty years old, there is bound to be a wide range of stories to tell. When Marvel approached Firaxis to propose making a game about their characters, the studio’s response surprised them.
During an interview ahead of the game’s upcoming release, Jake Solomon, Creative Director of Marvel’s Midnight Suns, told us that the teams decided to adapt an arc they held dear when they were younger: Rise of the Midnight Sonsa crossover from the 90s. This event features various heroes from the supernatural side of the Marvel Universe who band together to face Lillith, the mother of demons. Among the original members of this team we can find characters that are still in Marvel news, such as Ghost Rider, Blade or Morbius, but also heroes that have been somewhat forgotten, such as Hannibal King or Frank Drake. So if you want to make a game that is intended for the general public, you will inevitably have to make choices and concessions, as Jake Salomon explains to us:
When we decided on the Midnight Sons story, there were very few characters from that period that were still relevant, like Frank Drake or Hannibal King. Inevitably in the crowd there are heroes that people might not know and who aren’t all that relevant today. So we decided to take the members of this group that are still known today, such as Doctor Strange, Blade, Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze but also Morbius who will be added later in the DLC. Additionally, we added supernatural heroes that aren’t known to the general public, like Nico Minoru from the Runaways or Magik from the X-Men, but still we wanted to offer an even larger cast, with characters people would recognize. . – Jake Solomon, Creative Director of Marvel’s Midnight Suns
A complicated meeting with the Avengers?
In the game universe, therefore, the Midnight Suns consist of Blade, Nico Minoru, Magik, and Ghost Rider (not Johnny Blaze the Newbie, Robbie Reyes) led by Caretaker, a witch several hundred years old. The game’s story begins when Lillith, the mother of demons, was summoned by Hydra. Faced with this great threat The Avengers decide to join forces with the Midnight Suns to awaken Hunter, Lillith’s child who defeated her mother three hundred years ago. Thus, this character, which the player embodies throughout the adventure, will represent a bridge between these two groups of heroes who don’t necessarily get along at the beginning. Jake Salomon explained this to us in our interview:
We wanted to tell this story that features these supernatural heroes dealing with a supernatural menace returning to earth. But while the Midnight Suns think it’s up to them to take care of this problem, the demonic entity attacks the Avengers first, leading Iron Man, Captain Marvel, or Captain America to tell each other it’s up to them lies to stop Lillith. So we have a friction between the Avengers, the greatest heroes in the world, the most famous superheroes in the world, and along the way we have this group of little-known superheroes, most of whom are young. Thus, the relationship between the two groups represents a central element of the game’s story. In this context, the player plays a brand new character, who doesn’t even exist in the comics, and finds himself between these two teams who have a competition that forces the player to To make decisions. – Jake Solomon, Creative Director of Marvel’s Midnight Suns
Beyond the clash with Lillith, The rivalry between the Midnight Suns and the Avengers is therefore an important plot element of the title. This is noticeable in the various stages of exploration of the abbey, which allow you to interact with the heroes inhabiting the building.
