After the first Mass Effect appeared in 2007, BioWare also played with alternative concepts within the franchise. “We explored a game concept in 2008, a little after the first Mass Effect was delivered. In this one you would have played a character comparable to Han Solo in a Star Control-inspired game in the Mass Effect universe,” says Kieken. “The game should expand the game universe and would have been created parallel to the actual trilogy.”
In particular, the thought of a “grayer character” in the style of a smuggler would have appealed to him in the Mass Effect universe. “It would have allowed you to see the world from a completely different angle than that of the super soldier.
