Ethan Hunts from “Mission: Impossible” are always dangerous, but fatal but mostly only for brunette women on Ethans side. But who is the late Marie from Ethan's past?

If “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” comes to cinemas on May 21, 2025, not only spectacular action and breathtaking stunts await us, but also emotional answers to one of the most puzzling questions in the film series: What really happened with Marie and why did she have to die?
Marie, played by Mariela Garriga, was a mysterious woman from Ethan's past. In “Dead Reckoning Part 1” she only appeared in short flashbacks. In it we see how a young Gabriel kills a woman who is obviously close to Ethan. Ethan can only observe the crime, Gabriel gets away with it.
However, this scene is a completely new information for all “mission: Impossible” fans, Gabriel, the murdered woman and ethane time before the IMF in general were never an issue.
Who was Marie and why is she pursuing Ethan Hunt to this day?
The name of the woman hardly played a role in the film, but at the latest the credits of “Dead Reckoning” gave the deceased a name: Marie.
Marie was apparently more than just a fleeting acquaintance: she played a central role in Ethan's life and her tragic death by Gabriel's hand (Esai Morales) changed everything. It should be certain that Marie did not work for the IMF, because the impossible mission Force only joined Ethan after Marie's death.
Gabriel and Marie: A murder with method
Gabriel is not just an opponent, he is a reflection in dark. He did not kill Marie by chance, but with calculation: to break Ethan.
How deep the connection between Gabriel and Ethan really goes is unclear. But like director Christopher Mcquarrie in one Interview emphasized:
The missions have to be real, they can not only be hinted at.

This statement suggests that Marie the emotional key to Ethan's story and Gabriel's motivation is.
Return in flashbacks? What we can expect from Marie in Part 8
We already know that Garriga in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning – Part 2” will return. Then we can expect a longer flashback that explains the relationship between Marie, Ethan and Gabriel. Were Ethan and Marie a couple, maybe even married? Or was Marie with Gabriel together and then fell in love with Ethan?
“Mission: Impossible 8” is more than an explosive finale. It is a film about loss, retaliation and trust. The processing of Marie's death could become the heart of the film and show who Ethan Hunt really is when the masks fall.
With a runtime of 2 hours and 49 minutes, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is the longest film of the entire franchise for good reason. Because director Christopher Mcquarrie decided to split the grand finale in two films. So no figure from Dead Reckoning should be neglected, while at the same time there is enough space for spectacular action and emotional depth.
Allegedly, “The Final Reckoning” is the last use of Ethan Hunt. Does Tom Cruise go in action pension? If you want to get in the mood in advance, you can now stream for free “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning”. Perfect for preparing for the explosive finale.
