So we find ourselves surprised, but not really surprised, by this announcement “Moana 2” will be released on November 27, 2024. You can watch the first look here, which appears to tease Moana, who has grown up since we last saw her. Apparently, this is a streaming series that was adapted into a theatrical movie. That’s probably for the best, but we’re curious what the whole creative process looks like inside.
Via Variety , Disney’s official synopsis reads: “Moana 2 will take viewers on a vast new voyage with Moana, Maui, and an all-new crew of unlikely sailors. After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestor, Moana must travel to the far reaches of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever experienced.” In addition to the description and trailer, Also released a first look image:
The sequel is directed by veteran Disney artist Dave Derrick Jr. (making his feature directorial debut) and features music by Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i, as well as Grammy Award winners Emily Bear and Abigail Barlow. No, Lin-Manuel Miranda is not expected to return to co-write the songs. Really bad!
“Moana 2” is part of Disney’s revamped theatrical strategy after poor performance in its streaming business and new IP launches, which essentially means a slew of hit animated sequels from Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios. Also: Yes, this is happening alongside the live-action remake of Moana that was announced about a year ago. This is a confusing time.
