Modern Warfare 2As with most recent Call of Duty games, full multiplayer cross-play and cross-progression are supported on all platforms. This allows players to party together and pair with each other.
However, for some reason some people prefer to only play with players on their own platform, and that’s where the option to disable cross-play comes in. Other than that, it’s currently only available on PlayStation.
While this may seem like another dodgy PlayStation-exclusive feature, the ability to disable cross-play has actually been available on other platforms in previous years. While it’s often late on the Xbox, it sometimes disappears and then comes back.
However, at the time of Modern Warfare 2’s release, it appears that only players on PS4 and PS5 will be able to turn off cross-play. As Eurogamer discovered, the toggle button normally found under Accounts & Networks simply doesn’t exist on PC or Xbox.
This could just be a bug, or the feature could have been turned off earlier to manage server load. Until then, Xbox players who want to turn off cross-play will need to do so through their console’s system settings, which obviously affects all other multiplayer games.
As for why someone would want to limit their player pool by turning off cross-play, the reasons vary by platform. Console players may feel that a mouse and keyboard offers an advantage, or if this becomes an issue, they may want to weed out cheaters in their lobbies. PC players also feel at a disadvantage against the heavy aim assist of the controller.
