modern warfare II (2022)’s campaign took place roughly two years after the events of the first game, and barely followed up, opting instead to carve its own path with the same characters and world state, culminating in a surprising set of innovations containing a large number of Downtime tasks, filled with quiet moments and introspection.
It also does a lot of neat things to the gameplay: a memorable stealth section that includes a wounded soap, giving it the feel of a very naughty dog. Sneak and surreal locations, hunt for crafting parts, and deftly avoid one chattering guard checkpoint after another.
And let’s not forget to mention that this game is absolutely gorgeous. There is a reason why the virus spread at the Amsterdam level.
As such, it’s innovative in its story and gameplay, excels on a technical level, while also finding time to be a classic Call of Duty campaign: with tons of action scenes, tense gunplay, and things to blow up.
But this is a CoD that is not afraid to withdraw, for our money? It’s better for it.
