Would you like to watch a video while surfing the web in another tab or working with another program? Mozilla Firefox's “Picture in Picture” feature, also known as “Picture in Picture” (PiP), lets you cut videos from web pages and view them in “floating” windows in the foreground. If you are watching a learning video or want to enjoy films or music, this is extremely practical.

The mode can be used flexibly. This means you can open several video windows at once and adjust their position and size to suit your needs. Controls that you call up with keyboard shortcuts also simplify video playback. Here we will show you step by step how to activate the function and use it optimally.

This is how you activate and deactivate the picture-in-picture mode

The easiest way to access Picture-in-Picture mode is through the video itself. Hovering over a video will bring up the Picture-in-Picture mode toggle. By clicking on the switch, the video opens in the picture-in-picture player window. Note that the switch is not present when a video is playing in full screen mode. In this case, you can alternatively select the switch via the address bar of the browser.

  2. Disable picture-in-picture Disable picture-in-picture

To deactivate the mode again, click on the switch in the upper left corner of the video. The video now switches back to the normal view within the browser and you jump back to the original tab. If you want to close the video but not jump back to the tab, press the X symbol.

How to use the controls for picture-in-picture mode

You can control playback and volume control in picture-in-picture mode using key combinations. For example, to pause a video or turn off the sound because you need to concentrate, it is a good idea to use these keyboard shortcuts. Here you can see an overview of some of the controls:
