multiplayerThe Warner Bros. IP-laden Smash-like game doesn’t seem to be that popular, as its average player count is in the four figures.
As Polygon discovered, if you head over to MultiVersus’ SteamDB, it keeps track of how many players are currently in the game, as well as player peaks, among other things. The only problem with MultiVersus is that it hasn’t hit four-figure player numbers since mid-September. At the time of writing, the game currently has a surprisingly low 24-hour player count of 1,223 players at its peak, a far cry from the 100,000 players when the open beta launched.
An important thing to note is that SteamDB only tracks the PC version of the game as it uses data pulled from Steam, which is something it cannot do for the console platforms MultiVersus, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. Whether or not MultiVersus has that much higher player numbers on consoles than on PC is unknown, but overall things look a little grim.

Many fans specifically said they wanted more characters, since the most recent one was November’s Marvin the Martian. It’s totally understandable that fighting games take their time releasing new characters, as it takes a lot of fine-tuning to get them right. But for a live service game, the lack of frequent updates can make players bounce back, which could indicate that a game like this isn’t free to play.
