Milestone Interactive was not out of work at the end of the last decade, signifying the end of the console generation. Between Ride, MotoGP, Monster Energy Supercross and MXGP, the Milanese studio has produced more than a dozen titles in 3 years since 2018 (!). We waited impatiently for the first baby adapted to a next-generation console, namely the PS5 and its DualSense controller. 2021 offers us this first draft with the Motocross and MXGP 2020, which were published on PC and Old-Gen in mid-December.
The sixth episode dedicated to the MXGP Championship, the fifth in five years. The latter, despite a real sense of technological advancement, may encounter some obstacles over time. Develops every season with little time between each opus, stagnation lurks and could tarnish Sony’s new beast. We had therefore initially expected a smooth technical transition and some content-related surprises, which were pretty boring in the last few installments.
A brand new engine called PS5
And from the start of the first race Regulars of the saga will feel the intricacies of the PS5. Already optically leave the usual frame rate drops during passages with a high density of pilots. The modeling of runners, motorcycles and tracks remains in the nails of recent games, especially the raindrops and pieces of earth projected onto the screen during intense games. Most noticeable is the fluidity of the animations and the game. The next generation aspect is felt that the title avoids frustrating collision errors even if it doesn’t select some tiny corner cuts. And in addition, The design of the various racetracks and their backgrounds have been redesigned. Some of them are really great in good weather
The cabin remains balanced in the freedoms promised by MXGP 2020, as beginners can switch to standard physics to smoothly discover the demands of the sport, while hardcore players can dive into advanced physics and customize the bike at will (suspensions, wheelbase, Gear ratio, etc.). There are some under the body, but also in the DualSense. Milestone did an excellent job with the latter: vibrations (landings from jumps, turns and even the engine at a standstill) from the resistance of the triggers in the race and the sound effects. A pleasure.
When the body sounds hollow
Unfortunately, Santa Claus is only half past one for fans of the series. The sensations are there, whether in advanced or standard physics, but they are not accompanied by content worthy of the name. The spearhead of most single player racing games, MXGP 2020’s career rests on its shy achievements
The escape called Norway
For the rest of the possibilities that the title offers, we again find the playground, ex-Compound, understand the sandbox mode of MXGP. A map big enough to escape and execute the characters of your choice in complete freedom. This year the Norwegian landscape of Nordland is superb and offers a significant decline
The Milestone Stamped Track Editor is still here, also with a very nice rural background. Nothing moves on the level of its very quick handling. There is only one decor left, however, and the implemented elements are not yet customizable in the design to stand out and add some soul to the circuit. Let’s finish with the online mode we would have liked to have measured on PS5, but the online servers are completely deserted for now. The price of transition.
The notes
+Good arguments
- Always from start to finish
- Technically and visually much finer
- The route that worsens live
- Work on the DualSense
- The sets of the playground and the editor
– –Negative points
- Career still too boring
- Check some collisions
- Empty online servers
We can say that MXGP got out of muddy tracks without much damage and successfully completed its next generation transition in shape. The sets and animations show great finesse, and the racing sensations, which were already at a good level in the previous work, are even more exciting on PS5. In addition, the Milestone teams have worked a lot on DualSense, enough to take the immersion even further and make the challenges even more exciting. We simply regret the lack of inspiration that always screams out of the series in its game modes, and the career doesn’t go further than a simple chain of races. This is the next dangerous scrub for the Milan studio.
