baby driver
We begin our criminal journey with the sole exception of our choices. baby driver is an action film directed and written by Edgar Wright (the Cornetto Trilogy) and starring Ansel Elgort alongside Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Eiza González, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx and finally Jon Bernthal. Why is Baby Driver considered an exception? Released in 2017, this feature film is inspired by rock star games. The dominance of the soundtrack is a first indication, the GTAs have always emphasized music with radios that have become legendary among gamers. The context of the robberies, the narrative climax and the photography, sunny and colorful, reflect in their own way those of the video game saga.
heat
heat is one of the most iconic heist films of the 7th art and even towers above all others. The feature film, directed and written by Michael Mann (Collateral, Public Enemies), and released in 1995, is actually a remake of the LA Takedown TV movie by the same director. The latter has recruited among the most famous actors of Hollywood cinema for this new high-flying heist. Under the masks and within the law enforcement agencies we find Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and finally Val Kilmer. Heat no doubt gave ideas to Rockstar Studios, which took the film’s final heist scene as it was. The Grand Theft Auto IV mission titled “Three Leaf Clover” is sort of a cut and paste of the famous cinematic sequence. Finally, the similarities between actor Robert De Niro and the character of Grand Theft Auto V – Michael De Santa – both physically and in attitude – are a close connection between the series of video games and cinema.

freedmen
freedmen (or Goodfellas in its original title) is a New York City underworld film directed by Martin Scorsese (The Departed, Shutter Island) and written by Nicholas Pileggi (Casino, The Irishman). This 1990 adaptation of the book Wiseguy features the services of Robert De Niro, him again, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci to bring the life of Henry Hill to the big screen between 1955 and 1980 from his rise to his fall within the Brooklyn Mafia. Goodfellas is considered by moviegoers to be one of the best gangster films of all time, alongside The Godfather and Once Upon a Time in America. Aside from its mafia context and setting, the city of New York which is the focus of Grand Theft Auto IV, Goodfellas shares one of its actors with another game of the GTA saga. Ray Liotta, who plays Henry Hill in the Mr. Scorsese film, lends his voice to the main character of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City…Tommy Vercetti.
scarface
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City drew heavily on gangster movies from the ’80s, but none come close to the legend scarface led by the supercharged Al Pacino. Directed by Brian De Palma (The Incorruptibles, Mission Impossible) and written by Oliver Stone (Born Killers), this film chronicles the bloody rise of organized crime in the city of Miami of a Cuban fugitive and ex-convict. The famous chainsaw that the Rockstar teams incorporated into their game pays homage to the feature film and its penchant for violence, a highly graphic violence. GTA’s various protagonists and their personal quest for the American dream also reflect Tony Montana’s corrupted vision. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City also shares many similarities with its cinematic counterpart, whether in terms of the music added to the soundtrack or The Vercetti Estate, which is heavily reminiscent of Tony’s Mansion, an iconic location from the 1983 film.

taxi driver
It’s hard to talk about the films that inspired Rockstar studios, and even more gangster cinema, without devoting almost exclusively attention to Robert De Niro’s career, given the latter’s prolificity in the field. taxi driver (1976), directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader (Raging Bull, Open Tomb), is not strictly a film about the mafia, but steeped in this sticky post-Vietnam War New York plagued by rampant crime. The story revolves around veteran Travis Bickle, a 26-year-old insomniac who becomes a cab driver. As he strolls the streets of the American city, he is a privileged witness to the vice that reigns supreme, fueling an existential crisis that will drive him insane. A disillusioned character and a depraved New York City…GTA isn’t far behind.
