In a report from Bloomberg, it has been revealed that Netflix may be working on bringing its video game service (currently limited to mobile apps) to our TV screens.
It’s an ambitious move for a streaming service. According to the report, hidden code was found in the Netflix app that references video games that play on TVs and our mobile devices are used as controllers.
The line of code in question actually reads: “Games on TV require a controller to play. Would you like to use this phone as a gamepad?” This suggests that there are some plans to bring Netflix’s games to the On TV, everything went well.
After first bringing games to the Netflix app in 2021, the first one I remember was a Stranger Things title. We also recently had Terra Nil on the app and you can see you bring the world back to life. It’s charming and perfect for mobile services.
It doesn’t compete in any way with Apple Arcade, which has more games, but there’s no doubt many of us already subscribe to Netflix. If that’s you, and you haven’t checked out what games this app has to offer, you should!
Netflix representatives did not comment when asked by Bloomberg about the discovery. Still, Netflix’s foray into gaming has already begun, and it’s no surprise that the company wants to expand on that front.
That said, finding some code in the app doesn’t confirm that we’ll be playing mobile games on TV screens anytime soon, but it does suggest the company is thinking about it. Only time will tell, but playing Terra Nil on the big screen would have been nice.
