To the confusion of many, Henry Cavill is no longer playing Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher series, replaced by Liam Hemsworth.
The good news (depending on how strongly you feel about this recast) is that the show is returning for a fourth se ason, although Cavill won’t be returning. Netflix announced yesterday (October 29) that another Hemsworth will be taking over the role, for reasons that are unclear, although it may have something to do with the actor’s official return as Superman.
“My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been full of monsters and adventures, and alas, I’ll drop my medallion and my sword for Season 4,” Cavill said in a statement. “As with the greatest literary figures, I pass the torch with reverence as I take the time to embody Geralt and passionately see what Liam thinks of this most fascinating and subtle man.”
Unsurprisingly, Hemsworth also had something to say about his casting, “As a Witcher fan, I’m delighted by the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill is an amazing Geralt Special, I am honored that he can take my reins and let me take the blade of the white wolf and venture for his next chapter.”
Season 3 of The Witcher hasn’t aired yet, and it’s currently scheduled to air some time in the summer of 2023, so we’ve got a little bit of Cavill to air.
CD Projket Red also recently announced that the first Witcher game is receiving a remake using Unreal Engine 5. There are basically no details about this remake other than the engine that made it, and Polish studio Fool’s Theory is a staple of it. Development is happening, but this is the latest in a series of announcements from CD Projekt.
