WA Wrapped promises a personalized annual review for WhatsApp. Whether the external app can hold that? (Image source: Background: Adobe Stock, Elements: WA Wrapped)
Panic on TikTok: Can mine Crush
now see how many screenshots I took of our chat? The app WA Wrapped
claims exactly that and is currently at number 1 Lifestyle
-Applications in the App Store.
You can find out how and whether this works here.
What happened?
Spotify Wrapped
has been doing it since 2016 and many apps are following suit: A personalized annual review shows you graphically prepared statistics about your usage behavior of the app.
Now the external iPhone app WA Wrapped wants to do the same for Messenger.
How does WA Wrapped work?
For a personal annual review, users must Export your chats from WhatsApp and at WA Wrapped hochladen. The app then outputs charts with statistics.
There is a free version. For a complete analysis, $5.99 must be paid at least once.

What's going on on TikTok?
This is why users on TikTok fear that intimate information about their usage behavior could appear in the charts of their contacts. Especially when chats with spicy contacts (usually they Crush
) were shared in groups or screenshots were taken, this causes uncertainty.

Does WA Wrapped even work?
Netzwelt has already tested the new app. See the results not particularly promising off: The number of data sent is still correct, but when it comes to information about screenshots and archived chats, the numbers shown have nothing to do with reality.
This is also logical: When you export chats, you get a .zip file (WhatsApp FAQ). Only your chats are saved as .txt files – and optionally your media such as pictures and voice messages.
The exported file does not contain any metadatawho took a screenshot of your chats or whether your chats were shared. So WA Wrapped doesn't have this information at all.
So there's no need to panic: the app delivers unreliable results and promises things it can't keep.
Should you download WhatsApp Wrapped?
In short: probably better not.
Even if you like personal annual reviews: for a complete wrap you have to pay at least 6 dollars once. And that for extremely questionable results.
In addition, the app comes from a relatively unknown third-party provider Tenacity Labs AND
. In their analyses, they suggest that they have data that they cannot have simply by uploading data from the exported chats. That doesn't inspire confidence.
That's why you should think carefully about whether you want to make your intimate chats available to this provider.
