Google Glass was a flop. But the group continues to believe in the smart glasses. On the Google I/O 2025, Google shows a new model based on Android XR and makes a lot different.

It has been known for a long time that Google together with Samsung and Qualcomm is working on a mix-reality headset called Project Mohaan. The model is reminiscent of Apple's Vision Pro and is based on the new Android XR platform. It should still appear in the course of 2025. At the Google I/O developer conference, the group has now presented another form factor for Android XR: Smart glasses. The first models of this are to be launched by Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. When leaves Google open?
Instead, there is a prototype created by Google at the developer conference that visually reminds of the glasses of “Superman” Clark Kent. It is equipped with cameras, microphones, speakers and optionally with a small display in the glasses on which you can view information – such as navigation instructions from Google Maps. Unlike the original Google Glass, the glasses apparently need a connection to your smartphone to work.
Google shows new smart glasses with Gemini
This should save Google in comparison and also increase the battery life. The manufacturer promises that the glasses can be used for an entire day and is hardly noticeable on the ears. The Google Glass, on the other hand, lasted a maximum of two to three hours. It remains unclear whether the information about the battery life relates to the use with or without a display.
In terms of concept, Google's new glasses remind you of Metas Ray Ban glasses. The use of artificial intelligence could make a difference. Because of course the AI assistant Gemini is available on the Android XR glasses. The voice assistant can interpret for you in real time, show the way to your goal and much more. Practical: Gemini can also access the cameras of the glasses and thus better understand the context of inquiries.
In addition to the Android XR glasses, Google has also announced a new brilliant feature for Gmail on I/O and a new search function that is supposed to solve a big problem with online shopping.
