Nothing, the young company of OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, will soon release the third Nothing Phone. This is not supposed to be the successor to the Phone 2, but rather a cheap entry-level version of it, nicknamed “Phone 2a”.
Just in time for the New Year, Pei wishes everyone a happy new year and at the same time teases the new cell phone. He uses an image that is reminiscent of a specific Pokemon.
Nothing Phone 2a und Aerodactyl
The picture shows a white silhouette that is very reminiscent of the Pokemon Aerodactyl. The Nothing community is discussing what the new cell phone has to do with Pokemon.

Some speculate that it may be related to the Chinese Year of the Dragon. Although Aerodactyl could be mistaken for a Dragon Pokemon, it instead has two types: Rock and Flying.
The answer to this is probably much simpler than you think: The Nothing Phone 2a has the model number A142. Aerodactyl is the 142nd Pokemon of the first generation. It is also said to have the internal code name “Aero”.
It is known that Carl Pei is a Pokemon fan, which is why you can often find Easter eggs about the popular franchise in the Nothing Phones.
With the Nothing Phone 1, for example, it is possible to create a contact with the name “Abra” (like the Pokemon of the same name) and assign it a custom ringtone to unlock the hidden Glyph music visualization.
What is known so far about the Nothing Phone 2a?
The Nothing Phone 2a will be the company’s first phone with a MediaTek processor. The first two Nothing Phones used Qualcomm Snapdragon chips. The Phone 2a is said to use the Dimensity 7200.
This is what the rumor mill says:
- Processor: MediaTek Dimensity 7200
- Memory variants: 8 / 128 and 12 / 256 GB
- Colors: Black and White
- Glyph LED strip: 3
- Cameras: Two in a horizontal arrangement
- Price: Under 400 dollars
The first render images of the Nothing Phone 2a have already appeared on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.
The new entry-level cell phone could be announced at the Mobile World Congress 2024. This will take place from February 26th to 29th.
