At the beginning of the year we told you about the Shenmue Dragon & Phoenix Collection, an ambitious Unreal Engine 4 remaster project of the first two Shenmue. Fans of Yu Suzuki’s work behind this initiative just shared some news and the least we can say is that things are going well.

“Lemon haze, “one of the heads behind that Shenmue Dragon & Phoenix Collection, recently released new images of the latter, showing the progress of the project and especially the work on the game environments.
The fan team behind this project explains that through the technical improvements the use of the Unreal Engine 4 allowed them to use new rendering techniques such as PBR materials (which make it possible to simulate different types of materials) and to incorporate real-time ray tracing.

As already mentioned, there is a double remaster behind the title Shenmue Dragon & Phoenix Collection. The Dragon Edition is a faithful port of the first two episodes, which were created with the help of Unreal Engine 4, the aim of which is to reproduce the original gaming experience in the best possible way.
The Phoenix Edition is presented as a “reinvention” of the two titles originally released on Dreamcast, with gameplay changes to approximate Shenmue III’s and new features.
