HDDs are actually old hat for PC gamers, modern SSDs are much faster. However, the company Western Digital has developed techniques that give the old data storage devices more capacity and make them faster. They have installed these in two new models.
The company offers the two new HDDs in one press release in front. On the one h and, there is the 22 TB Ultrastar DC and the 26 TB DC HC670 Ultra SMR. So far, the limit was actually 20 TB. Such huge HDDs are possible by combining different technologies.
These techniques are in there
The first technique is called OptiNAND. According to Manufacturer vertically integrated iNAND flash memory is used, and the firmware has also been improved. This should bring a performance advantage in the important random writing of the hard disks.
In addition, the advanced technology for writing to hard disks ePMR
that the HDD can store more bits per inch. Western Digital explains ePMR in one Blog-Post a little more specific.
The 26 TB HDD with these technologies should only be the beginning. According to its own statements, the company is on a clear path towards 30 TB and more. However, most HDDs and SSDs are much smaller. In the following article we explain the differences between the two types of storage:
SSD vs HDD:
What is the difference and how important is an SSD for gamers?
Who needs that much memory anyway?
An absolutely legitimate question in this context: Who needs so much memory anyway? For most private users, a few TB are often more than enough. The huge HDDs from Western Digital are therefore primarily designed for cloud storage providers. Inexpensive mass storage is particularly in demand here.
However, a fast SSD is often the better choice for gamers. However, you should think twice about the following SSD from Japan, as it deliberately has a major disadvantage:
This SSD deliberately takes over the biggest disadvantage of CDs and DVDs
How much do the two 22 and 26 TB hard drives cost? Western Digital has not yet commented on the unit price. However, hard drives with a capacity of 20 TB start at around 420 dollars.
How big is your hard drive and are you happy with the storage? Do you maybe even use an HDD? If yes, is there a good reason for it? Please let us know.
