More content. More barbarism. Netherrealm Studios has officially announced plans for the second year of Mortal Kombat 1, and they’re a real beast: more chapters will be coming to the story mode at the end of September, three fighters will return (with another three secured for the future), and we’ll once again witness the wildest executions in the series. A whole array of content with a few surprises added in between one thing and another.
The essential: after its notable absence at EVO 2024, Warner Bros and Netherrealm took advantage of the context of the San Diego Comic-Con to make the expansion official The Reign of Chaos for Mortal Kombat 1The basic idea and the way it will be launched is not very different from what we saw in the previous installment, mind you, and the new characters had been leaked for some time, but its presentation trailer makes it clear that Ed Boon and his team have some very good cards in their hands.
From here the question asks itself: How will everything that has been shown make its way into the game? Following the trend of Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath, reservations for two content packs have been enabled as of today. Mortal Kombat 1 on all systems (PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC) with early purchase bonuses:
- The Expansion The Reign of Chaosvalued at 49,99 dollarswhich includes the new chapters of the game’s Story mode plus Kombat Pak 2 with up to six new fighters.
- The Reign of Chaos Lotwhose price is 59,99 dollars and which adds to the Reign of Chaos Expansion itself (the Story and the fighters) the Kombat Pak1 with Omni-Man (Invincible), Quan Chi, Peacemaker (DC), Ermac, Patriot (The Boys) and Takeda Takahashi as well as all the paid Kameo Kombatants.
Needless to say, for a ten euro difference, it is worth going for the Bundle if you don’t have any of the additional DLC Fighters or are missing a couple of them. However, there is also one element to take into account: in this case, the Kombat Pack 2 with the six additional characters will not be sold separately.
However, in both cases the launch is rounded off by adding four additional skins for reserving any option: Scorpion Nuptials, Sub-Zero (Mortal Kombat 3), Mileena Empress and the Klassic Ninja Skin for the imminent return of Noob Saibot.
The Reign of Chaos, the problems do not end in the Liu Kang Era
As was evident in the post-credits scene of the story of Mortal Kombat 1Havik becomes the greatest threat of the saga. Or, at least, in Liu Kang’s new Era. After facing and defeating Kronika, Kang ascended to God of Fire, protector of the Earthrealm and, thanks to the great Hourglass, architect of destiny, being through the latter the architect of an Era created as it moves away from the darkness and barbarity of its past.
However, even in this reality where peace reigns, the custom of celebrating the Mortal Kombat tournament is not lost. Without going into too much detail, the climax of the story of Mortal Kombat 1 It leaves open what we can consider the doors of the multiverse, so there are different variants of each of the combatants.
Once the story is over, which I highly recommend, a Havik who has lost his sanity, his humanity and almost all of his skin has decided to make all of reality be consumed by chaos. And that’s where the already known protagonists come into play, as well as two others who had been absent.
The Reign of Chaos will be the gateway for the new Noob Saibot to this new installment plus the addition of the two Cyber-Ninjas: in the Era of Liu Kang we will see the female version of the classics Cyrax and Sektorwhich implies lethal techniques, cutting-edge technology and, as has been shown, a huge increase in agility for both. Something that, given what we have seen, will be very necessary in order to save existence. Or, at least, try to.
The six fighters of Kombat Pak 2
As we saw in Mortal Kombat 11 AftermathNetherrealm will aim to launch the expansion with new characters that we can use in all offline and online modes. However, and this is important, in The Reign of Chaos only half of those announced will be launched.
- To start with, from the launch of the expansion we will have three new combatants at hand: Cyrax, New Science Sector.
- Warner will later offer the remaining guest fighters with the same frequency as Kombat Pak 1.
Following the arrival of superheroes in Mortal Kombat 1, Netherrealm is once again betting on adding iconic action movie characters and horror movie icons. However, and to be fair, it was more of a confirmation of previous leaks than an announcement:
- Ghostface from the Scream film series. One of the latest icons to be consecrated within the Slasher Movies. It will be interesting to see how he plays hide and seek during the games.
- T-1000the iconic villain from Terminator 2, as seen in the film’s original likeness of Robert Patrick, including his police uniform.
- Conan the barbarianthe iconic Cimmerian imagined by Robert E. Howard who will have the appearance and sword of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1982 film.
It is striking that from Netherrealm They have not taken advantage of the opportunity to announce new Kameosthe characters that we can use as assistants during battles to extend the possibilities of our fighters and add new layers of gameplay. In fact, technically, the Kameos are the star novelty of this installment in terms of game mechanics. We’ll have to see what plans they have in this regard.
29 years later, the Animalities return to Mortal Kombat!
There are an infinite number of ways to sadistically finish off our opponents in the Mortal Kombatbut one of the most original has been exclusive to the third installment of the saga for decades, and until now: The Reign of Chaos will allow us to make Animalities again.
The idea itself is not very mysterious, mind you, but that does not take away from its brutal component: after entering the correct sequence of buttons during the moment of the finish, our fighter will transform into a bloodthirsty animal and will begin to mercilessly annihilate his prey.
To be fair, part of the fun of animalities is figuring out what each character turns into. Without going too far, and despite its name, in Scorpion’s Animality in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 The yellow-clothed killer turned into a penguin. That didn’t make him any less lethal.
From this point on, anything goes when it comes to reducing your opponent to blood and guts: from powerful hippos to puffer fish that turn their victims into watering cans, and even a giant praying mantis that will have no mercy on anyone who stands in its way. Who’s who? We’ll find out in September.
Reign of Chaos Release Date, Price and Availability
Digital reserves of expansion The Reign of Chaos of Mortal Kombat 1 have already opened on PC and consoles, setting the official launch for next month September 24, 2024 and its price is 49.99 dollars. As we mentioned before, Warner will not offer Kombat Pak 2 separately. Or, at least, it will not be possible to buy it without the new chapters of the story mode.
On the other hand, the arrival of the fighters Noob Information, Cyrax and Sector is also scheduled for September 24th, being available to all who have purchased the expansion and, to be fair, we want to understand that it will be possible to acquire them, from the in-game store individually. The date of Ghostface, the T-1000 and Conan is yet to be announced.
It is not known whether new scenarios for the other modes, more kameo fighters or some new mechanic or mode will be offered between now and launch or in the future. However, and as good news, the addition of Animalities will come as a free update to all those who have the base game. The end of Mortal Kombat 1 content? Even though there’s still a ways to go before everything arrives, we refuse to believe that Ed Boon and his team don’t have candidates for a third batch of content.
