Crystal Dynamics announces its next tomb Raider The game is built on Unreal Engine 5.
Announced today alongside the release of Unreal Engine 5, the next game in the series will be built using Epic’s technology rather than Crystal’s proprietary engine.
“Crystal Dynamics is proud to be a part of the Unreal Engine 5 release,” said Dallas Dickinson, general manager of Crystal Dynamics. “This new engine can translate into a higher level of storytelling and gaming experience. That’s why we’re excited to announce today that we’ve just begun development on the next Tomb Raider game powered by Unreal Engine 5.
“Our goal is to push the limits of fidelity and deliver a high-quality cinematic action-adventure experience that fans of the Crystal Dynamics and Tomb Raider franchises deserve.”
In the early stages of development, the last time we heard, the game would have a unified timeline. The Origins trilogy tells the story of Lara’s early days as she is cast as a survivor, a hero, and eventually a grave robber, while the classic game features an experienced and capable adventurer.
According to game director Will Kerslake, the team envisions the next game following an “established adventure” — from the first game from Core Design to the latest game released by Crystal Dynamics.
In addition to the next Tomb Raider, the studio is also working with Xbox studio The Initiative on Xbox-exclusive Perfect Dark.
Of course, Crystal Dynamics continues to develop its online service game, Marvel’s Avengers, which recently received a patch that brings a redesigned battle table that promises to simplify tasks and improve overall user experience.
