The design of the Nintendo Switch 2 shows a completely new button, but Nintendo has not yet revealed the function behind it. This could be behind the “C” button.

- A “C” button can be found in most design leaks.
- However, what this button stands for has not yet been revealed.
- The button may have a completely unknown function.
The first images of the Nintendo Switch 2 show that there is another button under the home button. The latest mega-leak has once again confirmed that it is labeled with a “C”. However, it is unclear what this is intended for.
There are various theories circulating on Reddit, for example the C could stand for “Connect”. Reddit user ThisCouldBeMe_ I suspect that this is how you start the “dual screen mode”. If the C stands for “Connect”, there would be another option.
Nintendo filed a patent some time ago that suggests local players can join a game on the Switch 2 even if they don't have their own controller. Instead of the Joy-Con, they can then use their smartphone.
“Communicate”, “Chat” oder “Camera”?
Another one theory According to this, the C could also stand for “Chat” or “Communicate”. In this case, pressing the button could open a context menu where you can then choose different chat options such as video, text or voice. The latter in particular would make sense, because the Switch 2 is supposed to have a microphone built into it.
It would also be possible that the C stands for “Camera”. In this case, however, a camera would have to be built into the Switch and Nintendo would probably have used a camera symbol in this case, just as the company uses a house for the home button.
Our theories
We also have theories about the C button. This could serve as a modifier. If you hold this button and combine it with other buttons, then there is a new function. This would be particularly useful for more complex games. In this case, however, the button would be in a very bad position.
Another consideration seems much more realistic to us: The Nintendo Switch 2 is backwards compatible with the first Switch. However, the company is making more and more games from previous Nintendo consoles available via Nintendo Switch Online.
It would be conceivable that the C replaces previous control elements so that you can also play the N64 and GameCube games on the handheld. Especially since the GameCube has a C-Stick.
How extensive is your Nintendo knowledge?
Which of these Nintendo games was also released in the arcade?
If you look at the past, you might also stumble upon Ocarina of Time. In the game the C buttons were assigned to the items. You could quickly switch between weapons and other tools. A modern single C button could also be considered “quick access”.
No matter what the C ultimately stands for, Nintendo has achieved what Rockstar used as a strategy in GTA 6. Fans discuss over and over again about the Switch 2 and the possible function behind the C button.
