Rumors about a supposed pro model of the Nintendo Switch have been circulating for what feels like an eternity, but unfortunately these have not become reality to this day. According to a new report, that is unlikely to change.
After the original release, new variants of the Switch were released by Nintendo. Specifically, there was the mobile gaming-oriented and cheaper model Switch Lite and the switch with the better OLED display, but there is still no sign of a more powerful Switch Pro – even though there were a number of rumors about this over a longer period of time.
Even if these speculations have not come true so far, according to a new report, there should have been something to it. Shortly before the turn of the year, the usually well-informed technology experts from Digital Foundry reported on the subject. According to them, such a Switch Pro actually existed in the past and was planned by Nintendo. However, this model will no longer be on the market.
Citing several unnamed developers, it is said that the Switch Pro has been discontinued in the meantime. That would fit with statements from Nintendo, which recently emphasized that the Switch line-up will remain with the previous offer for the time being.
It is also interesting in the report that Nintendo should be somewhat concerned about the next generation of consoles. While the Switch has proven immensely successful, Nintendo has also delivered flops like the Wii U as its platforms evolved – and that fate after the previously monumental success of the Wii, Nintendo continues to pursue. According to the technology experts, it is therefore possible that Nintendo this time will choose a more conservative approach for the successor to the Switch and is not planning any major innovations like the transition from Wii to Wii U.
Subscribers to the Switch Online Expansion Pack can look forward to two classic games, Mario Party and Mario Party 2, coming soon.
