For those who love all things Vikings, a city builder survival sim viking land Probably right up your alley.
Launching in Early Access today for $19.99 on Steam, the developer describes the game as Frostpunk with Vikings, but it also has a bit of an exile vibe if you ask me. This is a good thing because I love this game and have been hoping for a sequel for years..
Developed by Laps Games and published by Iceberg Interactive, in Viking Land, you are the lord of a new Viking village who must manage resources and survive harsh conditions and enemy raids. You must do so while guiding your fellow Vikings to work together through social conflict.
You need to expand your village by turning it into a thriving city, and the help of the Norse gods will help you earn various rewards in exchange for their worship.
You will need to chop down trees, plant and grow crops, hunt wildlife, mines and fish. Be sure to manage your resources carefully to ensure you survive the winter and expand your settlement season by season.
Each of your villagers is a character with over 20 traits. Pay attention to skills and abilities when assigning tasks to your employees, as not all Vikings are alike and not all jobs are good at.
As the settlement expanded, more Vikings would ask to join. If you don’t have room to spare, you can welcome them or turn them away. With or without them, though, your settlement will expand as your family starts to form families and give birth to new generations.
While this may sound like an idyllic presence, it may not always be smooth sailing. Mother Nature will cause earthquakes and lightning your way, and seasons will bring their own challenges, events and disasters. So expect blizzards, lots of cold and storms to deal with.
If you find yourself running out of stuff, you can trade with your neighbors anytime after you build a trade dock. Once you have, ships will visit you with different cargo, and you can also send out your own trade missions with the crew. You can also raid foreign villages for gold, silver and reputation points.
For raids, you need to train your Vikings as normal warriors, archers, berserkers or elite shieldwomen.
One of the coolest things about this game is that it’s gridless. This means you can build your village however you want, design it however you want, and increase the happiness of the Vikings. Monuments to Odin or Freya can be built, and you can customize the look of the Viking ships. You can even modify the look of your house using the building editor.
As you progress through the game, you can unlock new buildings and rewards by spending Fame Points at the Tree of Life Yggdrasil. Explore beer brewing and build taverns for your villagers to relax, invest in goat farming to collect wool, your Vikings will become healthier and happier as you create higher quality living standards and resources, your settlement Points will flourish.
Land of the Vikings launches today in Early Access with a 10% discount during launch week.
