There is nothing better than a good coffee in the morning, but that is a luxury that in the midst of the apocalypse is practically impossible to obtain. We could verify it in The Last of Us of Naughty Dog and now the same thing has happened in the adaptation made by HBO.
Attention spoilers: from this moment on, the plot of the fourth episode will be discussed openly.
After sleeping rough in the middle of the woods, Ellie wakes up in the morning to find a kettle next to her boiling. Joel is preparing a coffee that doesn’t look too appetizing and the young woman confirms this by opening the lid and sniffing the contents. After rejecting a bit of such a concoction, both resume the march in the truck.
Joel doesn’t hesitate to go back to drinking his coffee in the thermos, to which Ellie asks if “That was what they sold at the Starbucks in the quarantine zone.
Although it may not seem like it, it is a subtle reference to video games. During our visit to Pittshburgh, we can activate an optional conversation with Joel in the flooded hotel where the looters are. Starting at 1:06:33 of this video you can see how Joel longs for the sweet nectar of coffee.
There are many references that we find in the episodes of The Last of Us for HBO. One of them has to do with Ellie’s not very funny jokes or the music that we can listen to when the two protagonists travel in the van. However, the real terror is hidden under the cracked floor that we can see in a sequence.
