Alas, the Borderlands movie got off to a rocky start, with all signs from the box office numbers pointing to it being a flop.
I think it’s safe to say that Borderlands is a very popular franchise, right? Can we all agree on that? It has to be, or else the idea of a movie adaptation would be unthinkable. The movie has been in the works since 2015, which is always a reliable sign of a hit, and finally hit theaters last week after nearly a decade in development. How was it? Well, I gave it one star in my review because I simply couldn’t find anything to like about it. And it seems that this opinion is almost universal, with the film holding a 27/100 critics rating on Metacritic and a 2.8 out of 10 user rating. So it should come as no surprise that the film opened to a dismal $16.5 million against a $115 million budget, according to Variety.

The film grossed $8.8 million domestically, with $7.7 million coming from international ticket sales, a clear sign of “yes, we’re good, thank you.” Variety also noted that sources told the outlet that international presales made up nearly 60% of the film’s production costs, but that was still well below expectations. I think it’s safe to say we won’t be seeing a sequel, at least not anytime soon – the game might have to redeem the series’ image a bit.
Speaking of games, Gearbox head Randy Pitchford recently spoke about future sequels, and while he stopped short of outright confirming Borderlands 4, he did say the developer “isn’t going to make people wait very long before announcing it.”
