In the north of the Sultanate of Oman, in the middle of the Djebel Akhdar mountain range, lies a small green wonder. In one of the driest regions of the world, residents have managed to create lush gardens on rocky slopes. These oases are made up of terraces where fruit trees, vegetables and crops grow. Damask roses also bloom here. Rose water, prized throughout the Middle East, is derived from the flowers for which the region is known.
Water is extremely scarce in this desert region, but there are springs deep within the mountains. As early as 2,000 years ago, people demonstrated their inventiveness in channeling the precious water to their fields via channels that were sometimes cut several kilometers into the rock. These canals are called Falaj and are the lifelines of the villages. Even today they meander through the oases of Djebel Akhdar.
The villagers have lived off the fertile oases for centuries. But today their way of life, which is based on agriculture and animal husbandry, is endangered. Since the 1980s, the country has been experiencing a wave of modernization that is supplanting farm work and intensifying tensions over water as a resource.
As the region stands at a crossroads, scientists attempt to unravel the mysteries of the longevity of these ancient oases. The villagers know the value of their cultural heritage. Some of them keep the agricultural traditions alive, others breathe new life into the old villages by renting their houses to tourists.
