It seems that no matter how big the video game world gets, developers continue to find ways to make it even bigger. But the way to achieve this varies from game to game.
We are no longer in the “see that mountain?” era. you can go there! We are now in the “see that planet?” era. You can fly there! Two of the most anticipated upcoming titles are this year’s Bethesda’s Starfield and next year’s The Division developer Massive’s Star Wars: Outlaws.
But while Starfield took a decidedly No Man’s Sky approach to planet creation, Star Wars: Outlaws is heading in the opposite direction. In an interview with Edge magazine (via Eurogamer), creative director Julian Gerighty confirmed that the planets in Outlaws are handcrafted.
“We haven’t procedurally generated entire planets,” Gerighty explained, adding that you can expect each planet to be approximately “[equivalent to] For example, two areas in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. “
Jalette said the space should be more “manageable,” but he didn’t say how many planets “Outlaws” will contain.
Of course, this approach stands in stark contrast to Starfield, which has more than a thousand planets. Most of these planets will be left blank on purpose. Bethesda relied on procedural generation to not only create some of these planets, but to populate them with different enemies, encounters, flora and fauna, and sometimes quests.
Of course, Starfield will have its own set of custom planets, created by Bethesda, that will be the same for every player. No Man’s Sky popularized the idea of using algorithms to create entire planets based on parameters set by the developer, which could make each planet unique, but also had the side effect of making all objects appear to have different hues.
“Starfield” will land on PC and Xbox Series X/S on September 6th.
