Game News “One of the things I’m very proud of is the authenticity,” says a Rockstar Games veteran (GTA, RDR 2) about the quality of their game
Lazlow Jones, a video game industry veteran who worked for Rockstar Games for many years, recently revealed some of the secrets behind the studio’s big games, including how involved the developers were in the quest for authenticity.
In search of authenticity
One of the reasons Rockstar’s games are so successful is that they immerse the player in a realistic world. A real immersion that we owe to numerous details, including the surrounding dialogue. And that is the work that Lazlow Jones has done for the studio for more than twenty years.
Originally, Lazlow Jones was hired for the GTA saga starting with GTA III to write and record the lyrics for the various radio stations in the game, including the famous Chatterbox FM. The author took a more important place within the studio Grand Theft Auto: Vice City where he started writing down the dialogues of passersby. From then on he was involved in all of Rockstar’s projects.
A work he recently returned to in the podcast Pretty funny games. In this interview, he particularly addressed the issue of authenticity, explaining that his teams sometimes traveled “on site” to record certain accents typical of the places transcribed in the games, a method used more directly years ago for one of the most famous software programs in the GTA saga.
Original Gangster
Released worldwide in 2004 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreasa game unanimously praised by critics for its portrayal of the gangs of Los Angeles – in the game, Los Santos – and its captivating plot. But to achieve such a result, instead of hiring actors, Lazlow Jones and his team decided to work directly with gang members. “We showed them the scripts and they said to us, ‘We wouldn’t say that, we wouldn’t say that, or that …’,” he explained. The writer then asked them to “say what they would say.” Different situations written for the game. A decision that bore fruit and that allowed San Andreas to mark the history of video games forever. “One of the things I am very proud of is the ‘authenticity'” Lazlow Jones explained, and I can only agree with this statement, since his work has contributed to the reputation of Rockstar titles.
